Three Rivers Art Glass

High Relief Mosaic Project
$50
6" x 9" Slate Tile
Instructor: Lisa
Take your mosaic skills to the next dimension—literally. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll create a bold, high relief mosaic on a 6” x 9” slate tile using a mix of glass, stone, and found materials.
For this project, we will explore a different kind of mosaic making using thinset mortar, rather than adhesive and grout.
This type of mosaic-making allows for better use of natural materials, such as stone and wood, as well as for various found objects. These things, mixed with art glass, will allow you to make a more dimensional statement piece that will pop with color.
As always, we will have plenty of bucket glass to use, but you should also plan on bringing items that you may want to permanently incorporate into your finished art. I suggest a limited number of found objects and natural materials, as they are used more as focal points.
In this 2-hour workshop, you will:
- Learn how to work with thinset mortar as an adhesive and sculptural medium
- Combine glass with unconventional materials for a mixed-media mosaic
- Explore layering techniques to create depth and movement
- Design and assemble your own high-relief composition on slate
What’s included:
- 6” x 9” slate tile base
- Selection of glass pieces, stone, pottery, and found materials
- Use of tools and all necessary supplies
Walk away with a finished (or nearly finished) piece that’s completely unique—and a new approach to mosaics you’ll want to keep exploring.
No experience necessary. Just bring your creativity.
The following items are to be supplied by each Student
Goggles or eye protection. I always suggest wearing goggles during cutting/nipping and when using the grinder.. There is always a chance of flying glass! If you wear glasses on a regular basis, you won’t need goggles. If you don’t have any, I will have a few extra pairs to share.
Closed-toe shoes. Glass shards and bare feet don’t mix!
These items will be supplied by Cricket Mosaics and Three Rivers Art Glass (included in the class price):
Glass cutting tools. Nippers, grozing pliers, running pliers, hand files, and glass cutters are all available for your use during the class. A grinder is also available in the studio..
Stained glass. I have a large variety of broken pieces of glass, as well as some full sheets. If there is something you KNOW you will want, I may be able to get specific colors, etc.
Adhesives. Everyone will have their own!
Grout. There will be a light-colored neutral grout and a dark-colored neutral grout to choose from.
Grouting tools. Rags, sponges, all you’ll need!
Instruction and guidance. I will be there with you every step of the way!
